The central question addressed in this thoughtful and well-researched account of Fujimoro's Peru is how liberal market reforms affect the relative strength of different social groups. This places the book in a quite different class from the numerous ethnographically inclined studies of Latin American grass roots social movements, on the one hand, and more narrowly economic analyzes on the other. It is a study in political economy in the best sense.
